An Appel Today Kept the RailRiders at Bay

(Moosic, PA) - Mark Appel (3-2) turned in his strongest outing of the season on Wednesday night as he lead the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (39-44) to a 9-3 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (49-32). He struck out six batters while giving up four hits and issued one walk.

Appel got plenty of assistance as the Pigs came out swinging against Josh Maciejewski (0-2). They scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Rafael Marchan hit a two-run double, and Matt Vierling hit a three-run home run. The home run for Vierling was his third of the season. The Pigs answered with three more runs in the top of the fourth inning as Marchan hit a sacrifice fly and Jorge Bonifacio hit a two-run home run. The home run for Bonifacio was his third of the season.

T.J. Rivera received his first RBI as an IronPig when he hit an RBI single against Nick Green in the top of the seventh inning to extend the lead to 9-0. Armando Alvarez put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning when he homered against Jeff Singer.

Max Burt hit a two-run home run against Julian Garcia in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut Lehigh Valley's lead to 9-3. Garcia would complete the inning as he got Greg Allen to groundout to end the game.

Lehigh Valley and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre meet again on Thursday evening at PNC Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
