Memphis Redbirds News Release

GWINNETT COUNTY, Georgia - One night after Memphis and Gwinnett (Triple-A affiliate, Atlanta Braves) combined for three runs in the whole game, the 'Birds and Stripers combined for 16 runs on 17 hits during Wednesday night's game. Gwinnett won for the second straight night, topping Memphis by an 11-5 final.

The Redbirds (8-12) got on the board early, pouncing with two outs in the first inning. Lars Nootbaar singled to left field, followed by a booming home run to right field from José Rondón that made it 2-0 Memphis early. Rondón now leads the team with 16 RBIs this season.

After that, Gwinnett (11-9) roared ahead. The Stripers scored six runs in the first and one more in the second, racing out to a 7-2 lead. Gwinnett did its damage via extra-base hits. Jonathan Lucroy had a three-run double in the first, promptly followed by a three-run home run from Sean Kazmar, Jr. later in the inning. Johan Camargo provided another big blow in the second, driving in Drew Waters with a two-out RBI double.

The 'Birds chipped away in the top of the fourth, scoring twice on a double from Tyler Heineman that brought home Nootbaar and Rondón. Heineman, a switch-hitting catcher, had not started for Memphis in 15 days.

The Stripers answered back in the bottom half of the fourth, putting the game away with three more runs to make it 10-4. Abraham Almonte had the big hit of the inning, driving in two runs with a two-out single. Gwinnett added another run in the seventh on an RBI single from Yolmer Sanchez.

Rayder Ascanio hit a solo shot to dead-center field in the seventh inning for Memphis. The Redbirds' starting first baseman finished the day 2-4 at the plate. Ascanio had four hits all season prior to tonight's game.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
