Durham Bulls News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Bulls starting pitcher Dietrich Enns yielded a lone hit and one walk in five and one-third strong innings, with relievers Brian Moran, Phoenix Sanders, Ryan Sherriff and Yacksel Rios firing the final three and two-thirds perfect innings, while catcher Deivy Grullon homered in Durham's 3-0 one-hit shutout victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Wednesday night at 121 Financial Field.
Jacksonville 2B Bryson Brigman's second-inning single to right was the only base knock for the home side. From that point on, 22 of 23 Jumbo Shrimp hitters were set down, with DH Corey Bird's sixth-inning leadoff walk marking the only other time a Jacksonville batter reached base. Moran (1.0 IP, 3 K), Sanders (1.1 IP, 2 K), Sherriff (0.1 IP) and Rios (1.0 IP, K) retired all 11 hitters they faced in support of Enns (5.1 IP, H, BB, 4 K), who earned his first victory.
Durham got the only run necessary in the opening frame when SS Wander Franco laced an RBI single to left. Grullon's solo shot in the fifth extended the advantage to two, while 1B Wyatt Mathisen's run-scoring single in the ninth provided additional insurance. Mathisen (2-4, RBI) was the only batter from either side to record a multi-hit effort.
The victory was the Bulls' fifth consecutive triumph, in addition to their seventh win over their last eight contests. Grullon's longball means Durham has now homered in 18 of their 20 matchups this year.
The two teams are set to continue their six-game series on Thursday evening in Jacksonville, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm ET. RHP Joe Ryan (1-2, 5.94) is expected to get the nod for the Bulls, with the Jumbo Shrimp anticipated to send RHP Luis Madero (3-0, 0.93) to the hill.
The Bulls are set to return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, June 1 to start a six-game homestand versus the Norfolk Tides. First pitch of that series is scheduled for 6:35pm ET. Tickets for that series, as well as for Durham's six-game homestand with Charlotte between June 8-13, are now available at durhambulls.com.
