Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES - The Iowa Cubs (9-8) fell behind early to the St. Paul Saints (8-11) and lost the first game of the series by a score of 17-6, Tuesday at Principal Park.
St. Paul jumped all over Iowa starter Cory Abbott, scoring 10 runs on seven hits against the righty. Abbott threw just four innings, his shortest outing of the year, walking five batters while striking out seven. He gave up five earned runs and two home runs in his outing.
Jose Lobaton got the I-Cubs on the board with an RBI single in the fourth inning, their lone run of the game until the bottom of the ninth. Lobaton went 2-for-3 and was one of just two Iowa hitters to register two hits.
The Saints added two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh when Ryan Jeffers hit a three-run shot off of Tyson Miller. Brent Rooker added two more runs for St. Paul in the ninth inning with a two-run shot, his third of the year against the I-Cubs.
Iowa showed some life in the ninth inning, scoring five runs on three hits, four walks and a hit batter, but ultimately fell short, losing 17-6.
