Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp registered just two base runners on Wednesday, tallying just one hit in a 3-0 loss to the Durham Bulls at 121 Financial Ballpark.
The Jumbo Shrimp (13-7) have now lost a season-worst three consecutive games, and dating back to the fifth inning on Tuesday, have reached base just four times in their last 46 plate appearances. Durham (14-6) recorded 10 strikeouts in the game, including six in a row at one point.
Vidal Bruján sparked the offense for Durham right out of the gates. He led off the ballgame by working a walk, and stole second on a pickoff move, ultimately making it to third on the play as a result of an errant throw to second. One batter later, Wander Franco followed with a single to left to score him and make it 1-0.
Daniel Castano (loss, 0-2) would settle down to retire 10 of the next 11 batters, the lone exception being a Ryan Bolt single that was erased immediately on a double play ball in the third inning. The only other offense Castano allowed came when Deivy Grullón led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to left. Later in the inning, with two men aboard, Tristan Gray singled to right, but Jesús Sánchez gunned down Wyatt Mathisen at the plate to prevent any additional damage.
Dietrich Enns (win, 1-0) gave up the only two base runners of the ballgame in 5.1 scoreless frames, striking out four. Bryson Brigman singled with two outs in the second, and Corey Bird walked to lead off the sixth and stole second. Those were the lone baserunners of the night for Jacksonville
Durham tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. Josh Lowe singled to lead off the frame, and moved up to second on a passed ball. Grullón then drew a walk to put two men on base. With two outs, Mathisen singled to right to score Lowe and make it 3-0, but Sánchez rifled a throw to third base to cut down Grullón for his fourth outfield assist of the season to end the inning.
Tommy Eveld worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in his season debut for Jacksonville, striking out two.
Game three of the series is set for Thursday at 7:05 p.m. when Jacksonville sends righty Luis Madero (3-0, 0.93) to the slab to do battle with Durham right-hander Joe Ryan (1-2, 5.94).
Gates open at 6 p.m. for a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday at 121 Financial Ballpark, where fans can purchase $2 (12 oz. draft) and $3 (24 oz. draft) Budweiser products on the left field berm canopy. It's also Military Appreciation Night presented by VyStar Credit Union, and all active, retired, veterans and former military members and their dependents will receive a free field reserved or general admission ticket (subject to availability) at the Jumbo Shrimp box office.
Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 690 and online at espn690.com, MiLB.tv, and the MiLB First Pitch app.
