Worcester Red Sox News Release
ALLENTOWN, P.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (11-9) allowed six runs in the fourth and never got closer in a 6-0 defeat against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (13-7) on Wednesday night.
The WooSox did not have a hit entering the ninth inning, a stretch that extended one out in to the final frame after a strikeout. But Michael Chavis stepped up and rapped a hard single to center to break up the no-hitter, Worcester's lone hit in its second shutout loss of the season.
For the second straight day, the two teams were scoreless through three at Coca-Cola Park, and for the second straight day, the game turned in the fourth. This time, it was Lehigh Valley who took control, scoring six runs-the most runs the WooSox had allowed in a single inning all year.
Austin Listi began the rally with a single against Worcester starter Kyle Hart. After a strikeout, Edgar Cabral-who scored the game-winning run last night-doubled. Hart then struck out Sal Gozzo, but the ball got to the backstop to load the bases. The next batter, Travis Jankowski, watched a 3-1 pitch miss inside to walk in a run, and Ruben Tejada singled home Cabral to make it 2-0. That was Hart's final pitch, who battled through a rain-soaked outing to throw 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs with five strikeouts.
Matt Hall entered in relief for the WooSox, who walked Cornelius Randolph and allowed a sac-fly from Ryan Cordell, before former PawSox C.J. Chatham tripled to clear the bases. In the end, the IronPigs put up six runs on four hits and two walks to take a 6-0 lead after four.
Brandon Workman followed Hall out of the bullpen and delivered his fourth straight scoreless outing. Since allowing a run in his Worcester debut on May 11, the 2013 World Series Champion has thrown five scoreless innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts.
The WooSox continue the six-game series in Allentown on Thursday against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at 7:05 p.m. Radio coverage starts at 6:45 on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network. Lehigh Valley's Adonis Medina (2-0, 4.85), a top 10 prospect in the Phillies organization per MLB.com, faces Ryan Weber (0-1, 2.95).
