Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds dropped game one of a six game series at the Charlotte Knights at Truist Field in Charlotte, N.C. on Tuesday night by a final score of 14-7.
Two big Charlotte innings did Memphis in on Tuesday night. The Knights pushed across six runs in the bottom of the first inning and four more in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away.
Memphis fought back in the middle innings, scoring five unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings. Back-to-back RBI doubles from right fielder Conner Capel and shortstop Paul DeJong tallied the three in the fifth. First baseman Luken Baker clubbed his ninth homer of the year in the sixth, a two-run blast deep to left field.
The Redbirds threatened in the top of the eighth inning, loading the bases before an out was recorded. Catcher Ali Sanchez led off the inning by collecting his season-high third hit of the game. Memphis would go on to leave the bases loaded without scoring a run.
Capel capped off the night with a solo home run to lead off the top of the ninth inning, his fifth of the year. DeJong followed just pitches later for his second blast of the season with Memphis.
On the night, Memphis used a season-high tying seven pitchers and gave up a nine-inning high 14 runs. Redbirds pitching also allowed a season-high 17 hits.
The Memphis Redbirds (27-22) will head to Charlotte, North Carolina to start a six-game series against the Charlotte Knights (18-31) on Wednesday, June 1 for a 5:35 p.m. CDT first pitch.
