Jumbo Shrimp Club 14 Hits in Win over Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp smacked 14 total hits and came away with an 8-3 win over the Norfolk Tides to open their series Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

Jacksonville (26-23) drew first blood in the top of the second. Payton Henry started the inning off with a double. Two batters later, Erik González walked and Bryson Brigman followed with a single off Norfolk starter DL Hall (L, 0-1), scoring Henry from second to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 1-0 advantage.

The Tides (23-26) tied the game in the bottom of the second. With one out, DJ Stewart (2) evened the score with a solo home run off Jacksonville starter Bryan Hoeing (W, 4-1).

The Jumbo Shrimp took the lead in the top of the third and never looked back. With two outs, Lewin Díaz (10) blasted his team-leading 10th home run of the season to put Jacksonville on top 2-1.

The Jacksonville bats continued to work in the top of the fourth. Henry led off with a walk and scored on a double from Charles Leblanc. González grounded out but Leblanc advanced to third and scored on a single by Brigman for a 4-1 lead.

Two more runs were added in the top of the fifth inning for the Jumbo Shrimp. Peyton Burdick got the inning started with a single and advanced to second on a one-out single from Jerar Encarnacion. Henry walked to load the bases. JJ Bleday grounded out but Burdick scored on the ground ball and Encarnacion scored on an error to give Jacksonville a 6-1 lead.

Jacksonville's final two runs came in the top of the sixth. González and Brigman started the inning with back-to-back singles. Three batters later, Díaz singled, scoring González from second. Encarnacion followed with the fourth single of the inning to score Brigman as the Jumbo Shrimp cruised to an 8-1 lead.

Norfolk answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Rylan Bannon tallied a one-out single and Kelvin Gutierrez followed with another single. With two outs, Jacob Nottingham singled to score Bannon as the Tides cut the deficit to 8-2.

The Tides made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Aneurys Zabala started the inning with back-to-back walks. After a strikeout, he issued two more free passes and to make it a five-run game 8-3. Nick Neidert entered the game and tallied a strikeout and a fielder's choice to end the game.

Andrew Nardi highlighted the win with a strong appearance out of the bullpen. He tossed two scoreless perfect innings and added three strikeouts.

Jacksonville and Norfolk continue their series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. ET. The Jumbo Shrimp will turn to LHP Will Stewart (0-0, 1.64) and the Tides will counter with RHP Grayson Rodriguez (5-1, 2.32)
