Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (23-25) allowed a season-high 13 runs tonight, dropping game one of the series by a score of 13-3 to the St. Paul Saints (21-27), Tuesday at Principal Park.
In his first career Triple-A at-bat, Darius Hill hit the first pitch he saw out of the park, giving Iowa an early 1-0 lead. They loaded the bases with no outs and brought in another run to take a 2-0 lead into the second inning.
St. Paul answered with three runs of their own in the second on an RBI single from Roy Morales and a two-run blast from David Banuelos. John Hicks hit a solo blast in the third inning to knot the game at three, but then it unraveled for Iowa's pitching staff.
The Saints used three walks, a double, an error and a three-run home run to register a seven-run inning, breaking the game open 10-3. It stayed there until the top of the ninth, when St. Paul added three more runs.
JC Ramírez, Tyler Viza, Jharel Cotton and Ian Hamilton shut the I-Cubs down with 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits over that span.
