South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-Derek DeBlois and Austin Fyten scored, but the Greenville Swamp earned a 4-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum on Ladies Night. Tuesday's contest was the first of four straight against the Swamp Rabbits, and the loss was the Stingrays first regulation defeat in eight games, a stretch the Stingrays went 6-1-1-0.
Greenville would jump out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in a span of 1:15. Jordan Knackstedt would start the scoring for the Swamp Rabbits at 10:06, knocking a rebound off the pad of South Carolina goaltender Mark Dekanich into the net to make it 1-0.
Shortly following the goal, Vinny Saponari notched his fifth goal of the season at 11:21 on a wrap-around to extend the Greenville lead to a pair.
South Carolina would cut the deficit in half on a Derek DeBlois power play goal at 16:45. Stephan Vigier and Brett Cameron assisted on DeBlois fifth goal of the season, extending Cameron's point streak to seven games.
In the second period, Greenville would score the eventual game-winning goal on a broken play. A cross-ice centering pass deflected to left wing. Darien Dziurzynski found the puck on the tape of his stick, and he beat Dekanich past the right pad to make it 3-1 Swamp Rabbits.
South Carolina would again cut the deficit to just one on an Austin Fyten goal at 9:24 of the second period. Patrick Gaul collected a loose puck behind the net and centered to Fyten. The forward snapped a shot past goaltender Allen York's blocker to make it 3-2 Greenville.
In the third period, the Stingrays fired 13 shots on York, and Fyten nearly scored his second of the game on a shot that rang off the crossbar. However, Greenville captain Bretton Cameron notched an empty net goal at 19:50 to seal the victory for the Swamp Rabbits.
Greenville improved to 5-1-0-0 against South Carolina this season despite being outshot 35-26.
The Stingrays visit Greenville for a pair of games at 7 p.m. this Friday and Saturday. The club returns home to battle the Swamp Rabbits on Sunday for Mascot Mania at 3:05 p.m. It's a Crews Subaru and Charleston County Parks Family Days game, featuring $5 Kids Tickets and $5 Kids Meals.
