Walleye Notes
Big finish to week allows Toledo to pick up five points: After starting the week with a 5-4 overtime loss Friday night in Brampton, the Walleye rebounded to win the last two games to pick five of a possible six points over the weekend. Michael Leone started a comeback for the Walleye Friday night with a shorthanded goal that helped Toledo erase a 4-2 deficit to pick up a point. On Saturday night, six different players scored for the Walleye in a 6-1 rout of the Brampton Beast. Sunday came down to a shootout with A.J. Jenks scoring and Jeff Lerg stopping all three Komets shooters for a 3-2 win over Fort Wayne.
Record-Tying Crowd: The standing room only crowd of 8,000 Saturday night was the 12th sellout of the season for the Walleye which equals the single season record reached in 2009-10 and also during the 2014-15 season. The Walleye are averaging 7,038 per contest which is second most to Fort Wayne (7,541) but Toledo is leading the league with 94.7% capacity.
Lerg picks up Top Play Honors: Goaltender Jeff Lerg was outstanding Sunday night against Fort Wayne with 37 saves through regulation and overtime. His save on Garret Meurs during the three on three overtime was the stuff of legends and came in as number one on ESPN's Top Plays Sunday night. Lerg is tied for second among all ECHL goaltenders with 20 wins, he ranks third in goals against average at 2.05 and his .929 save percentage is second.
Jenks leads the ECHL: A.J. Jenks scored his ECHL leading sixth shootout goal during Sunday's win over Fort Wayne. His six shootout goals are double the next most for any player in the league. Three of his goals have gone in as shootout game-winners, also the most in the ECHL.
Dominating home play: With back to back wins this past weekend, the Walleye have scooped up six straight victories on at the Huntington Center going back to January 24 vs. Utah. That is just one win shy of the Walleye record set during last year's season from January 25 through March 1, 2015. Toledo has a home record of 16-5-0-1 and has outscored teams 71-39 on home ice.
Walters heads back to AHL: Forward Dane Walters has been recalled by the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. Walters played in all three games this past weekend and picked up a pair of goals. He has four goals and two assists in 14 games with Toledo this year and another goal in 15 contests with Rockford. In a separate transaction, defenseman Gentry Zollars was released by the Walleye. Zollars appeared in two games for Toledo with no points.
Busy week ahead for the Walleye: Toledo embarks on a four game trek over five days starting Wednesday night in Toledo against the Colorado Eagles. It's the first-ever meeting between the two teams and the Eagles come to town on a roll winners of eight of their past ten contests. Friday night in Fort Wayne starts a home at home for the Walleye and the Komets. Each of the last four meetings has been one goal games with each team winning twice. To round out the week is a visit to Toledo by the Kalamazoo Wings. Toledo has a record of 2-2-1 vs. the KWings this year but Kalamazoo won the last two meetings.
