Palazzese Shines against Thunder in 4-0 Wheeling Win
February 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY- For the second time in five days, the Wheeling Nailers made their way to Glens Falls Civic Center, and in similar fashion to their first visit, they came away with a victory. On Tuesday night, the Nailers scored four goals in the third period, and Franky Palazzese was perfect on 29 shots, as Wheeling blanked the Adirondack Thunder, 4-0.
There was no scoring during the first two periods of action, as Franky Palazzese and Peter Di Salvo stared each other down save-for-save, blocking all 37 attempts they faced. Palazzese made a clutch save in the first period, denying a redirection by Louick Marcotte, while Di Salvo and the Thunder shut down a two-man advantage by Wheeling which spanned for 1:56.
At the 3:22 mark of the third period, the Nailers finally broke through. Andrew Cerretani poked the puck through to Andrew Ammon on the left side of center ice. Ammon turned on the jets as he exploded into the offensive zone, reaching the left circle, where he roofed a wrist shot over Di Salvo's right shoulder. 3:52 later, Wheeling added to its lead. Mathew Maione rushed the puck in on the left side of the offensive zone, and although his shot was stopped, Chris Ciotti flipped in a backhander on the rebound. With 4:53 remaining, Cody Wydo upped the advantage to three, when he tipped in Brett Stern's one-timer from the right point, which was set up by Riley Brace. Connor Leen capped the scoring in the 4-0 triumph with an empty netter in the final minute.
Franky Palazzese backstopped his third shutout of the season for Wheeling, turning aside all 29 shots he faced. Peter Di Salvo suffered the loss in his Adirondack debut, making 26 saves on 29 shots.
The Nailers will continue their six-game road trip on Wednesday night at 7:05, when they visit the Elmira Jackals. Wheeling will then play three home games on February 26th, 27th, and 28th. Friday the 26th is a Flat Screen Friday, presented by The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday. Saturday the 27th is Disney Night, starring Corey Fogelmanis, who plays the character "Farkle" from Girl Meets World. That night will also be Pink in the Rink, while also featuring a Wine Tasting Event. Sunday the 28th is a Family Funday. Thanks to McDonald's, kids tickets are $5 for that afternoon's tilt, and there will be a post game skate with the team.
