Thunder Downed by Mallards in a Shootout
February 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS - Kyle Follmer recorded a regulation goal and found the net in the fourth round of the shootout to push Quad City (23-21-3-2) past Wichita (10-31-5-5) by the final of 2-1 on Tuesday night at INTRUST Bank Arena. Wichita drops to 1-2-0-1 in the season-series with the next meeting coming at the beginning of March.
Dean Chelios recorded his fifth goal of the season, which was the lone Thunder tally of the night.
Wichita took an early lead as Chelios stuffed home a rebound past Brody Hoffman at 6:10 to take a 1-0 lead. Kollmer tied the game six minutes later as he received a pass from behind the net and fired it home past Grant Rollheiser for his third of the year.
The next forty minutes was a stalemate, as both goaltenders stood tall in net. Wichita had a 10-3 shot advantage at the start of the third, but couldn't solve Hoffman. The two teams combined for 27 shots in the final frame.
After a scoreless overtime, the shootout was needed. Andy Huff and Matt Carey were successful in round one. The next four shooters were stopped by Rollheiser and Hoffman. Follmer scored at the top of round four, setting up a chance for Chelios to tie it once again. His shot from the right hashmark missed the net and the Mallards grabbed the extra point.
Both meetings between the Thunder and the Mallards at INTRUST Bank Arena needed a shootout to decide the outcome. Donnie Harris got the only assist on Chelios's goal. Rollheiser was named the number one star, stopping 41 of 42 shots he faced. Hoffman was just as good in net for the Mallards, stopping 33 of 34 shots and earning second star honors.
Wichita was 0-for-1 on the power play. Quad City went 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Thunder remains home to host the Idaho Steelheads for the first-time ever on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Saturday is An Evening with the ARC and our annual Police vs. Fire game, starting at 5:15 p.m.
Individual tickets for all games are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased at the INTRUST Arena Box office, by calling 855-755-SEAT or go online at www.selectaseat.com.
