Friesen Becomes Fourth Former K-Wing to Make NHL Debut this Season
February 16, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - Former Kalamazoo Wings forward Alex Friesen made his NHL debut last night with the Vancouver Canucks against the Minnesota wild at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
Friesen, who played ten games with Kalamazoo during the 2012-13 season, skated in 11:43 of action in last night's Canucks' loss, and logged a hit and a shot on goal.
During his ten games with the Wings in the 2012-13 season, the 2010 draft pick (round six, pick 172) of the Canucks was able to generate four points and two penalty minutes.
With his appearance, Friesen became the 589th former ECHL player in the league's 28-year history to play in the NHL, and he became the fourth Kalamazoo alumnus to make his NHL debut this season. Friesen joins the likes of Jordan Binnington (St. Louis), Yanni Gourde (Tampa Bay), and Alex Grenier (Vancouver), who have all made their NHL debuts this season.
The St. Catherine, Ontario native has been in the pro ranks since the conclusion of his junior career with the Niagara IceDogs (OHL) in 2012. Friesen has spent most of his time in the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves and Utica, collecting 199 games played and 77 points.
The Kalamazoo Wings host the Colorado Eagles for two games on Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20, as part of Winterfest at Wings Event Center. The weekend will feature an outdoor tailgate tent as well as a chili cook-off on Saturday. For $8, fans can taste-test and judge the chili competition to help name a winner during the third period of the February 20 game.
Friday's game will feature Eric Kattelus wearing his fan-voted ECHL MeiGray Fantasy Team jersey that will be up for auction after the game at www.meigray.com. Joel Martin will be donning his MeiGray Golden Goalie jersey during Friday's game, which will also be up for purchase at www.meigray.com.
