San Antonio Rampage News Release
HOUSTON (October 3, 2008) - The San Antonio Rampage fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Houston Aeros at the Sugarland Ice and Entertainment Center on Friday night in AHL preseason action. Forward John Lammers had a pair of goals in regulation and the game winner in the shootout as the Aeros rallied for the win. Four different players scored goals for the Rampage in the loss.
The Rampage opened the scoring early in the first period when forward Chad Kolarik snapped in a wrister from the left circle thru a screen in front on a power play chance at 6:50 to beat Aeros goalie Nolan Schaefer. Defenseman David Schlemko set up the play with a crisp cross ice pass. Kolarik was a big addition to the Rampage this past spring in the playoffs after finishing his career at the University of Michigan, leading the Rampage with four post-season goals. The Rampage were 1-2 on the power play in the first, while Houston went 0-1.
The Aeros tied the game just 27 seconds in to the second period as the puck took a crazy hop after a save by Rampage goalie Josh Tordjman and ended up on the stick of Lammers who slipped it into the wide open net from the right side of the cage. Houston then took their first lead of the night on a power play goal as Lammers struck again, this time tipping in a nice centering pass from forward Peter Olvecky at 2:34 to make it 2-1 Aeros. San Antonio drew back even as defenseman Drew Fata walked down the left wall then ripped a slapshot that deflected off traffic in front and into the back of the net at 9:27. Fata played five games last season with the New York Islanders.
The Rampage retook the lead quickly in the third period as forward Brad Schell scored 45 seconds in to the frame on the first shot against new Aeros goalie Anton Khudobin. Forward David Spina, who wore the "C" as the captain for the Rampage, had the lone assist. Houston pulled even again as forward Ryan Lang tied the game at three goals apiece at the 7:05 mark. At the 12:28 mark the Rampage took their third one goal lead of the night as forward Derek Nesbitt slipped a quick cross crease pass to forward Adam Perry who snapped it into the net for a 4-3 Rampage advantage. Once again the Aeros came back as defenseman Clayton Stoner found a loose puck at the bottom of the left circle and ripped a wrister into the top corner of the net high glove side at 17:06 to tie it at four goals and send the game to overtime.
In overtime each team had a power play chance, but neither could capitalize. The shootout would extend into extra shooters before Lammers potted the game winner.
Tordjman went the whole way between the pipes for San Antonio and stopped six of eight in the shootout, but took the loss.
Schaefer for Houston turned aside 10 of 12 shots in 40 minutes of work. Khudobin played the final 25 minutes and allowed a pair of goals. Schaefer came back in net for the shootout and got the win by stopping seven of eight shooters.
