Syracuse Crunch News Release

Oswego, NY (October 3, 2008) - The Syracuse Crunch were defeated by the Binghamton Senators tonight, 2-1 at the Oswego State Campus Center Ice Arena.

The first period ended in a scoreless tie, but both teams had some good opportunities. The Crunch's best scoring chance came on a power play about four minutes into the frame. Kirill Starkov got to a rebound off a point shot in front, but was denied by the right pad of Binghamton starter Mitch O'Keefe.

The Senators had a 5-on-3 advantage for 33 seconds 12:26 into the period, but stellar goaltending from Crunch starter Dan LaCosta stymied that opportunity.

The Crunch finally broke through on the score sheet 10:48 into the second stanza. Starkov sent a head man pass to Blair Yaworski to spring him on a breakaway. Yaworksi deeked to his forehand and tucked a shot under the pads of O'Keefe for the 1-0 Crunch lead.

David Reekie took over for LaCosta to start the thrird period and the B-Sens struck quickly, scoring two goals on a five-minute man-advantage with The Crunch's Trevor Hendrikx in the box for interference. Hendrikx also received a game misconduct on the play.

Zack Smith took a cross-ice feed from Ilya Zubov and buried it into the empty net at the 5:15 mark of the third. Smith struck again for what proved to be the game-winner just over two minutes later when he redirected a Brendan Bell point shot past Reekie for a 2-1 Binghamton lead.

CRUNCHABLES: Dan LaCosta made his second straight start of the preseason tonight before being replaced by David Reekie in the third period...Kirill Starkov notched an assist tonight and now leads the team in preseason scoring (2g, 1a).
