Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins (2-0) topped the Lowell Devils (0-3) Friday night 6-4 at the new Dunkin' Donuts Center, helped by five goals in the second period. Zach Hamill and Brad Marchand each had two goals while Joe Rooney and Martins Karsums added single tallies.
The P-Bruins scored the lone goal of the first period when second-year center Hamill converted on his first goal of the preseason at the 7:31 mark of the first, assisted by Marchand and Andrew Bodnarchuk. Providence took a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
The P-Bruins then exploded for five even-strength goals while allowing one in the second frame. Providence reeled off the first five goals of the period, all against Devils starter David Caruso, including the second of the game from Hamill and a pair from Marchand. Rooney, of Canton, Massachusetts, also tallied a goal, followed by a goal from the slot by Karsums. Caruso was pulled after the sixth goal, stopping just 10 of 16 shots in his 30:33 between the pipes. Lowell got on the board for the first time at the 16:04 mark when Rosario Ruggeri netted a power play goal against Providence goalie Kevin Nastiuk. He was on in relief of starter Kevin Regan, who blocked all 15 shots he faced over the game's first 30:33.
Lowell scored three times in the third period as Patrick Davis, Stephen Gionta and Ben Mondou all lit the lamp against Nastiuk. Davis and Gionta both connected on the power play, marking three straight man-advantage goals for the Devils, including Ruggeri's score.
Several players registered multiple-point games, including Hamill and Marchand for Providence, each with two goals and two assists. Defensemen Bodnarchuk and Johnny Boychuck both added a pair of assists. Ruggeri and Gionta each had a goal and an assist for Lowell.
Regan earned the win for the P-Bruins while Nastiuk stopped 13 of 17 shots in relief in 29:27. For the Devils, Caruso took the loss and Jason Smith blocked all 10 shots he faced in his 29:27.
On special teams, Providence was held scoreless in six power play chances while Lowell scored three times in seven man-advantage opportunities.
Providence plays its final preseason game Saturday night at the MassMutual Center against the Springfield Falcons at 7:00 p.m.
