Albany Devils News Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A five-goal second period by the Providence Bruins put the contest out of reach for the Lowell Devils in a 6-4 loss during preseason action. Bruins forwards Zach Hamill and Brad Marchand led the offense for their squad with two goals each.
Providence notched the only goal of the first period when second-year center Hamill converted on his first goal of the preseason at the 7:31 mark.
The Bruins then exploded in the second frame, reeling off five consecutive even-strength markers. Hamill gathered his second goal of the contest while a pair from Marchand made the score 4-0. Former Devil Joe Rooney turned it into a five-goal cushion for Providence before Martins Karsums' goal completed his team's scoring wave. Caruso left the game after the Bruins' sixth goal having made 10 saves on 16 shots in 30:33 of work.
Providence goalie Kevin Regan also exited the net going a perfect 15-for-15 Lowell picked up its first goal of the game at 16:04 of the second when Rosario Ruggeri netted a power play tally against relief goalie Kevin Nastiuk. The Devils then notched three straight goals in the third period as Patrick Davis and Stephen Gionta also scored on the man-advantage. Ruggeri and Gionta finished the game with a goal and an assist each for Lowell. Benoit Mondou later pulled the Devils within two on an even-strength tally, but that was as close as Lowell would get.
Regan earned the win for the Bruins. Nastiuk stopped 13 of 17 shots for Providence, while Jason Smith turned away 10-of-10 for Lowell over the final 29:27 of the game.
The Devils went 3-for-7 on the power play and were a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
The Devils' preseason finale takes place tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at The Rink at Shelton in Shelton, CT.
