Rampage Conquer Texas in a Shootout

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage (12-17-0-3) took it to a shootout tonight against their instate rivals, the Texas Stars (18-9-2-3), but ended up victorious pulling through for a 3-2 win in front of 8,904 at the AT&T Center.

Captain Greg Rallo opened the scoring for the Silver and Black 1:19 into the second with a one-timer snipe from the left circle for his eighth of the year. Wade Megan netted his first of the season early in the third, and Denny Urban and Bobby Butler made it count in the shootout. Jacob Markstrom stopped a season-high 45-of-47 shots and all four Texas shooters in his first game since being sent down from Florida earning the game's First Star. Howden's assist on the Megan goal gives him two points in his last two games.

The Rampage were outshot, 47-35, and the win puts them at 2-4-0-0 against the Stars this season.

For the sixth straight game between the instate rivals, it was the Stars who drew first blood. After trading penalties throughout the opening frame, Texas finally made it count.

Chris Mueller threw a shot in from the slot, and Brett Ritchie was there to bang it home, beating Markstrom to put the Stars up 1-0 just 4:55 into the first. Brendan Randford earned the secondary assist on the power play marker. The goal would hold over until the first intermission.

The Rampage found their offense barely a minute into the second, as Vincent Trocheck dangled his way into the zone and passed it off to Rallo. The captain wasted no time and ripped a one-timer home from the left circle, beating Nilstorp clean and knotting the game at one.

Despite firing 15 shots on goal in the middle frame, the Stars were unable to find the equalizer, and the two teams headed into the final 20 locked in at one.

Megan picked up a drop pass from John McFarland about six minutes into the third, and fired it right past Nilstorp to give the Rampage the go-ahead goal and make it 2-1.

The goal was Megan's first of the year, and Quinton Howden earned the secondary assist.

In typical Texas fashion, the Stars did not go down easily. Ryan Button found the back of the net with just 1:40 remaining in regulation, and his second of the year sent the game into overtime.

The extra time wasn't enough for the two teams, and the game continued into the shootout. Urban and Butler beat Nilstorp in the skills competition and Markstrom stopped all four shooters to give the Rampage the 3-2 decision.

San Antonio went 0-for-6 with the extra man, but were able to hold the league's best power play at bay, as Texas went 1-for-5.

The Rampage will travel to Cedar Park tomorrow night to complete the home-and-home with Texas. The 7 p.m. game will be the first of five Rampage games broadcasted on FOX Sports Southwest this season, and it will be the first to include the "Tune In To Win" promotion.
