Sharks Knock Down IceCaps
December 27, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
In their first contest following a 12-day Christmas break, the IceCaps fell 5-2 to the Worcester Sharks Friday night at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.
Worcester scored three times in the second frame, including the eventual game-winner off the stick of Marek Viedensky, to win their fourth game in five tries versus the IceCaps this season. Harri Sateri made 34 saves on 35 shots before being forced from the game due to injury with seven minutes left in the third.
JC Lipon and Zach Redmond scored for St. John's while Jussi Olkinuora stopped 28 shots in the loss.
The IceCaps opened up a 1-0 lead after a great start to the opening period. Carl Klingberg headed behind the net and slipped a blind backhand pass to Lipon near the side of the net, who knocked in his fifth of the season to give the visitors the early advantage.
The Sharks snapped their offensive drought late in the second period on a goal by Freddie Hamilton. On a four-on-three man advantage, Hamilton took a cross-ice feed from Adam Comrie and ripped a shot upstairs to tie it 1-1.
Just 32 seconds later, Worcester took the lead on Taylor Doherty's second of the season. Doherty took a pass at the blueline and wired a slap shot past a screened Olkinuora to put the Sharks on top 2-1.
The Sharks added to their lead 2:44 after the go-ahead goal. Curt Gogol busted in off the right side and bounced a shot off Olkinuora's pad, but the rebound went to Viedensky, who pounced on the loose puck and beat Olkinuora to make it 3-1.
In the third, Worcester extended its lead to three midway through the frame on a goal by Brodie Reid off the rush. Dan DaSilva cut to the front of the net and his rebound found the stick of Reid, who buried his third of the season.
St. John's cut the lead in half on a power play with just over six minutes to play in regulation on Redmond's fifth of the season. After a Dylan DeMelo hooking call put the IceCaps on the power play, Redmond took a cross-ice pass from Jason Jaffray and fired a wrister high on Troy Grosenick, who replaced Sateri after the starting netminder left the game with an apparent leg injury.
Eriah Hayes scored into the empty net to make it 5-2 and seal the victory.
The IceCaps continue their three-game road trip against the Atlantic Division-leading Manchester Monarchs at Verizon Wireless Arena Saturday night (8:30 PM NT).
