Devils, Kinkaid Hit New Heights
December 27, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY -- Keith Kinkaid made 19 saves and Scott Timmins and Chris McKelvie both scored, leading the Albany Devils to a 2-0 victory against the Adirondack Phantoms Friday. The win was Albany's fifth-straight at Times Union Center, extending their home point streak to eight games - tied for the second longest stretch in the AHL this season.
"You've got to get these points at home," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "We've done a good job on the road, but it's very important that we get points at home when we can here."
In just his 17th appearance, Kinkaid registered his fourth shutout of the season, tying a franchise record held by Jeff Frazee (2008-09). Kinkaid, who entered the night with the league's best goals-against average of 2.09, made nine saves in the first, five in the second and five in the third. He has won 11 of his last 13 starts.
"I didn't even know about that," Kinkaid, who registered his 50th career win, said when asked about the milestones. "It's just another team win and we want to get as many wins as possible and try to solidify a playoff spot early if we can."
Kinkaid leads the AHL for shutouts.
Offensively, Timmins scored at 6:10 of the first period. Joe Whitney picked up Raman Hrabarenka's dump-in and found Timmins alone in the slot for a quick wrister.
"We just dumped it in and I saw all their players were just kind of gravitating toward the puck," Timmins said. "I just kind of hid out in that little soft area. I screamed as loud as I could for it and just shot it off quick and it went in."
The goal was Timmins' seventh of the year, giving him at least one point in 13 of his 15 appearances. Whitney moved his team-leading point total to 30 and Hrabarenka registered his 11th assist in his 18th game.
McKelvie sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 3.7 seconds on the clock. Mike Sislo was credited with the lone assist. Albany improves to 18-8-2-1, including 10-4-1-0 at home. Adirondack goes to 14-13-0-2. The Devils, who owned a 33-19 shot advantage, are now 15-2-0-0 when scoring first, 13-1-0-0 when leading after one and 15-0-0-0 when leading after two.
Next up, the Devils host the Portland Pirates at Times Union Center Saturday at 5 pm. Fans can take advantage of the "Holiday Special," which includes $10 tickets at the arena box office. The first 1,600 fans will receive a free Albany Devils Zamboni Bank.
