Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton managed to make it four wins in a row tonight with a 4-3 road victory over the Utica Comets. Mike Hoffman put home his team leading 15th goal of the season to give the B-Sens the win and with a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins loss, sole possession of first place in the East Division.
Darren Archibald gave the Comets the early lead 4:12 into the first period off assists from Pascal Pelletier and Alexandre Grenier. However, Binghamton's Matt Puempel would respond at the 10:08 mark of the first on a power-play goal to even the score at 1-1. Comets goaltender Joe Cannata and Binghamton's Nathan Lawson would turn aside the remaining first period shots to send the teams to the locker room tied.
Utica grabbed its second lead of the game just 1:26 into the middle frame with Grenier putting home his first of two goals on the night off a helper from Pelletier. The B-Sens came right back with Puempel tipping home a Danny New slap shot less than one minute later for his second goal of the night. Binghamton's power play would give them their first lead of the game when Mark Stone managed to put home a lose puck past Cannata giving the Sens a 3-2 advantage. Utica held true to the back-and-forth battle by evening the scoreboard at three goals apiece when Grenier put home a power-play goal for the Comets less than one minute later sending the teams to the third period knotted at 3-3.
The third period was a goaltenders battle with Lawson stopping all six shots from Utica while Cannata stopped all of Binghamton's 11 tries except Hoffman's power-play shot with less than 30 seconds remaining which gave the B-Sens the 4-3 victory.
Puempel finished with two goals to lead Binghamton while Derek Grant added two helpers. Grenier finished with two goals and an assist for the comets while Pelletier added two assists to his team leading points total. Lawson stopped 29 of 32 shots to earn his eleventh victory of the year. Cannata dropped to 2-7-0 with the loss.
