Rampage Blanked at Charlotte, 3-0

CHARLOTTE (March 30, 2013) - San Antonio matched a season high with 44 shots on goal, but ran into a hot goalie, as the Rampage (29-30-1-6) were blanked by the Charlotte Checkers (39-24-2-3), 3-0, on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Arena to wrap up a three-in-three weekend.

A night after scoring four times on Charlotte goaltender Rob Madore, the Checkers netminder shut the door and stopped all 44 shots he faced to earn his first career shutout. The 44 shots tied a season high for the Rampage, which was also recorded in San Antonio's 5-2 win over Hamilton on Dec. 22.

The defeat snaps a two-game winning streak for the Rampage and dropped San Antonio to 3-4-0-1 in the final game of the season series between the divisional rivals.

Rampage goaltender Brian Foster stopped 15-of-the-18 shots he faced in the game in only his second start of the season for the Silver and Black.

The Rampage allowed Charlotte only three shots on goal in the opening period, which tied a season low set twice on Oct. 28 and Dec. 21. But the Checkers were able to cash in on one of their three opportunities when Beau Schmitz lit the lamp at 16:59 on a blast from the top of the right circle.

San Antonio tallied 15 shots in the opening frame, the best of which came when rookie Jared Gomes found the puck on the doorstep while on the power play four minutes into the period. However, Gomes wasn't able to pull the trigger and the Rampage went into the locker room trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes of action.

Charlotte lit the lamp only 1:06 apart in the second period to take a 3-0 lead over the Rampage. Zach Boychuk scored first at 9:03 of the middle frame and Brody Sutter followed suit at 10:09 with a strong move to get to the front of the net before depositing the puck past Foster.

The Rampage again held the shots edge in the second period and held a 24-13 advantage after 40 minutes, but trailed 3-0 heading into the final frame.

San Antonio fired a whooping 20 shots on goal in the third period, but couldn't get anything past Madore, despite several high-quality chances that were turned aside down the stretch of the game.

The Rampage won the shots battle, 44-18, but finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play, while Charlotte was 0-for-2 with the man advantage on the night.
