Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates used an Andy Miele goal in the third period to tie the game and force a shootout, ultimately defeating the Albany Devils by a 5-4 score at the Times Union Center. Miele scored twice for the Pirates on the night and Alexandre Bolduc had a 3 point night in the victory.
Power plays were crucial in the first period, with all three goals scored in the first coming on the man advantage. A Corbin McPherson penalty for holding just 31 seconds into the game put the Pirates on the power play, and Andy Miele took advantage, scoring his 15th goal of the season. Albany's Reid Boucher, playing in his first professional game, would get Albany on the board, beating Mark Visentin for his first professional goal. Boucher's goal came on the power play at the 12:43 mark of the first. Nick Johnson would put the Pirates back on top, continuing his torrid scoring streak as he beat the Devil's Jeff Frazee for his 3rd goal of the year at the 18:12 mark of the first. Johnson's goal also came on the power play, giving Portland a perfect 2 for 2 power play record in the first. Portland outshot Albany 17 to 5 in the first period, taking a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Albany controlled much of the second period. Mike Sislo tied the game at 2:05 of the second period. Joe Whitney gave the Devils their first lead of the night with a power play goal with 12:26 left in the 2nd, the forth power play goal scored in the game. Sislo extended the lead with 9:15 left in the second, his third point of the period, and chased Mark Visentin from the game, with Mike Lee taking over. Alexandre Bolduc brought the momentum back to Portland's side, scoring on the rebound after Chris Brown's shot for his 24th goal of the year at 14:27 of the 2nd. Andy Miele had the opportunity to tie the game after he was awarded a penalty shot with 2:21 left in the period, but he was stopped by Frazee.
Portland ratcheted up the pressure in the third period, putting 14 more shots on net. Andy Miele would beat Frazee for a second time with 5:48 to go in regulation, tying the game at 4. Mike Lee would then take over for Portland, making a series of fantastic saved in the third period and overtime, forcing the game into a shootout.
Mike Lee allowed his first shootout goal of the season after coming into the game a perfect 9 for 9 in shootout saves, but Ethan Werek would score the deciding shootout tally to give the Pirates the 5-4 win. Portland improved to 5-2 in shootouts this season, while Albany dropped to 3 -11 on the year.
With the win, Portland improves to 37-25-3-2 on the year and moves 5 points ahead of both Connecticut and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the 5th spot in the Eastern Conference. Mike Lee snapped a personal 4 game losing streak, stopping all 12 shots he faced in relief of Visentin for his 7th win of the season.
The Pirates get back to action next Friday night, when they face the Manchester Monarchs in a winner take all 12th game of the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Parts, Tires & Service. Portland currently leads the VIP Cup Series with 13 points to Manchester's 12. Puck drop is set for 7 PM from the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.
