Crunch Shut out in Norfolk

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch were shut out 2-0 by the Norfolk Admirals tonight at the Norfolk Scope.

Admirals goaltender Frederik Andersen made 41 saves and Sami Vatanen and John Mitchell scored for Norfolk to improve their season record against the Crunch to 3-2-1-1.

The Crunch's overall record falls to 39-20-4-5 and road record to 23-10-1-2. With 87 points, Syracuse is part of a four-way tie for most points in the Eastern Conference (Springfield, Providence and Binghamton also have 87 points).

After a scoreless first period Norfolk drew first blood with a goal from Sami Vatanen 7:21 into the second period. Vatanen's snap shot beat Crunch netminder Riku Helenius high on the glove side during a period of four on four hockey. Assists went to Kyle Wilson and Devante Smith-Pelly. John Mitchell doubled the Admirals lead with a shot from the high slot 4:52 into the final frame. Smith-Pelly and Wilson each picked up their second point of the night by assisting on the goal.

Helenius turned aside 25 of 27 shots while the Crunch's power play unit continued to struggle, unable to convert on eight man-advantages. Syracuse held the Admirals power play unit scoreless on each of their four chances.

There is one more regular season meeting between the Crunch and Admirals scheduled for April 19 at the War Memorial.

Crunchables: Carl Nielsen made his professional hockey debut tonight...The Crunch had not been shut out on the road prior to Wed. March 20, since then they have been shut out twice in three games...The Crunch is 0/26 on the power play in their last six games.
