Penguins Inch by Senators in Shootout
March 30, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Trevor Smith picked up his 20th goal of the season and the game-winner in the shootout as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins downed the Binghamton Senators, 3-2, at Cumberland County Civic Center. The Penguins closed out their season series versus Binghamton with three straight wins.
The Penguins scored on their first three shootout attempts as Chad Kolarik, Riley Holzapfel, and Smith each beat Nathan Lawson. The Senators scored in rounds two and four, but Louie Caporusso would send the puck wide in the fifth round to give the Penguins the win.
Streaking down the right wing, Kolarik buried his 25th goal of the year to open the scoring. At the top of the faceoff circle, Kolarik whipped a wrist shot under the crossbar on the short side to give the Penguins up 1-0 at 9:24 of the first.
The lead was short lived as Shane Prince pounced on a defensive zone turnover and beat Jeff Zatkoff to the far side post on a quick snapshot with 7:38 to go in the first frame.
Smith put the Penguins back in front on the power play while also reaching a milestone that has seen him score at least 20 goals in all six of his seasons in the AHL. Beau Bennett worked the puck up to the left point for Kolarik who blistered a slapshot towards goal. Smith's redirect gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead at 10:18 of the second.
The Senators battled back as Daniel New tied the game up with his second goal of the year. A loose puck found its way up to the high slot and New blasted home a slapshot past Zatkoff's blocker to knot it up at two 3:43 into the third period.
Zatkoff stopped 27 shots and 3-of-5 in the shootout for his 22nd win of the season. Lawson made 30 saves through overtime for the Senators.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is back in action on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013 as the Penguins visit the Norfolk Admirals at 7:15 P.M.
