Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats shook off a rough first inning to put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but fell in the opener of a three-game set with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks by an 8-6 score.

The RailCats came off the bus swinging, collecting three hits in the first inning against Fargo-Moorhead starter Alex Caldera, who was making his first start after serving as the closer. Adam Klein led off the game with a double into the left-center gap and scored on a Brad Boyer single to left. The single extended Boyer's hitting streak to seven games.

The RedHawks answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring seven runs as starter Roman Martinez allowed six hits. The big blows in the inning were a two-run single from Brian Ruggiano and a two-run double from Mike Coles, his second double of the inning. Martinez pitched just one inning in his RailCat debut, handing the ball to fellow newcomer Carlos Rivas in the second.

Rivas, who started on Friday but was limited to just an inning due to the rain, surrendered just a single run in the fourth during his four innings of work. The RailCats began to rally in the fifth, Klein singled and stole second with one away, and Boyer drove him in with a two-out double. The RailCats also added runs in the seventh and eighth, with Kyle Haines, activated from the disabled list before the game, singling home Lorenzo Scott in the eighth.

The rally continued into the ninth. Klein and Mike Massaro singled with one away before Boyer knocked in his third run of the game with a single. Cristian Guerrero posted an infield single to load the bases for Scott, who walked to force in a run. Closer Adam Tollefson settled down, posting consecutive strikeouts to end the game.

Klein led a 15-hit attack with four hits out of the top of the lineup. All but one starter recorded a hit in the game. Boyer made a tremendous diving play in the bottom of the seventh.

The series will continue tomorrow night at 7:02 p.m. RHP Jack Frawley (2-2, 4.85) starts for the RailCats against LHP Jake Laber (3-1, 1.64).

The RailCats return home on Thursday. A renewed rivalry with the St. Paul Saints gives the RailCats the chance to throw a Mardi Gras style party to celebrate, as U. S. Steel Yard will be transformed into a family friendly version of Bourbon Street! There will be plenty of party surprises all night long and at least one parade so this is a day you sure won't want to miss!
