Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 13-7 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Monday night.

Ryan Hinson worked into the eighth inning to earn his fourth win of the season, while the Wingnuts offense scored eight times in the bottom of the seventh to break the game open.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Patterson singled through the left side against Captains' starter Joel Kirsten to lead off the inning. On the next pitch, Brent Clevlen hit a towering home run to left field that gave Wichita a 3-2 lead. Juan Richardson followed Clevlen with another long home run, this one clipping the batter's eye in center field.

After Wichita extended its lead to 5-2 on Jorge Delgado's two-out, RBI single to left in the bottom of the sixth, Shreveport pulled within one when Alex Cowart hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left-center to cut the Wingnuts lead to one. With two outs, Robert Perry reached on an infield single, but was thrown out at second by Edwin Bellorin trying to steal for the final out. Bellorin threw out two potential base stealers in the game.

Wichita then erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the inning, sending 13 men to the plate. Josh Workman started the rally with a bloop single to shallow left field. Workman stole second base, and then after Bellorin was retired on a flyball down the right field line, Mike Conroy was hit by a pitch. With runners now on first and second, Jose Duran grounded a single through the right side to make it 6-4. Conroy and Duran each took an extra base when right fielder Bryan Sabatella's throw bounced off of Workman's foot at home plate.

Kirsten was relieved by Justin Young who allowed a sacrifice fly to left field from Josh Horn. Duran stole third with Patterson at the plate. Patterson was then hit by a pitch, leading to a double steal of home and second to give Wichita a four-run lead. Young then walked Clevlen and Juan Richardson back-to-back to load the bases. Cody Railsback relieved Young and allowed a bases-clearing triple off the left-center field wall to Delgado. An error by Sabatella and an infield RBI single from Conroy capped off the eight-run inning. The hit extended Conroy's hitting streak to 15 straight games. Conroy has also now reached safely in 23 consecutive games.

Shreveport managed three runs against Hinson in the top of the eighth, but could not get any closer. Brandon Mathes and Gary Lee combined for one and two-thirds scoreless innings to finish out the win.

Hinson went seven and one-third, allowing seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits. Hinson struck out five and walked two.

Kirsten was charged with eight earned runs on nine hits in the loss. Kirsten did not allow a walk nor record a strikeout.

Shreveport had taken an early 2-0 lead against Hinson in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Andres Rodriguez. Uriak Marquez added a two-out, RBI single to left later in the inning. Patterson singled home Horn in the bottom half to put Wichita on the board.

Eight of the Wingnuts nine starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run.
