Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

WICHITA, KS.---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains lost the opening game for the third straight series, as the Wichita Wingnuts broke open a one-run game with an eight-run seventh inning to beat the Captains 13-7 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium Monday night.

Wichita third baseman Juan Richardson went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, including a solo home run in the fourth inning off Captains starter Joel Kirsten (3-2). Richardson's homer to dead center field was the second of a back-to-back tandem that followed center fielder Brent Clevlen's two-run shot down the left field line. First baseman Jorge Delgado also provided an offensive spark, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs including a bases clearing triple in the bottom of the seventh.

Shreveport-Bossier took an early lead off Wichita starter Ryan Hinson (4-2) by hitting three straight singles to start off the game. Andres Rodriguez then knocked in Mike Provencher with a sacrifice fly to right field. Two batters later, the Captains made it 2-0 on Uriak Marquez's RBI single.

Kirsten allowed one in the first on a Ryan Patterson single but then retired eight in a row before giving up three in the fourth on the back-to-back homers. Kirsten had allowed just one home run all year coming into the game. A Jorge Delgado single would score Richardson in the sixth to make it 5-2 Wichita, though Delgado was thrown out by Brian Peterson at second base trying to stretch his single into a two-bagger after Richardson had scored.

Captains rookie left fielder Alex Cowart hit his second home run of the year, a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left center to close the Wingnuts lead to one. However, Wichita capitalized on three walks, two hit batters and an error in the seventh to break the game open 13-4. Kirsten was lifted with one out in the seventh and runners on second and third. Justin Young came in and gave up a sacrifice fly to short stop Josh Horn. He then hit Patterson with a pitch and walked Clevlen and Richardson to load the bases. Cody Railsback came in to relieve and allowed the bases-clearing triple to Richardson.

Railsback allowed a two-out RBI single to catcher Edwin Bellorin later in the frame before striking out second baseman Jose Duran to end the inning.

Shreveport-Bossier would plate three in the eighth on a Marquez ground out and a double by Peterson, which scored Rodriguez and Palmer Karr Jr. when it was booted in left field by Mike Conroy but the Captains would go quietly in the ninth against Wichita reliever Gary Lee.

Captains right fielder Bryan Sabatella went 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 18 games dating back to May 25. Robert Perry went 3-for-4 with a run and reached base safely four of five times. Seven different Captains scored one run in the contest. It marked the fourth time this year Shreveport-Bossier has allowed ten or more runs.

The Captains look to bounce back Tuesday night when they send Aaron Cunningham (1-3, 6.43) to the mound against one of the American Association's best hurlers so far, Nick Singleton (7-0, 2.03), who ranks first in the league in wins and fourth in ERA. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
