Tacoma Rainiers News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Tacoma Rainiers (5-6) hammered the Sacramento River Cats (5-6) for a 15-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Raley Field.
The Rainiers offense collected 12 base knocks and drew 11 walks as part of the 15-run outburst. Tacoma's 15 runs were the most scored by the club since beating El Paso 16-15 on August 4, 2016. First baseman Cameron Perkins led the way again, going 3-for-6 with two runs, one double, and two RBI on the afternoon.
Left fielder John Andreoli (2x5, 3 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB), right fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis (2x5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI, BB), third baseman Matt Hague (2x6, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI), and center fielder Ian Miller (2x5, R, 3 RBI) all collected multiple hits for the Rainiers.
Tacoma starting pitcher Christian Bergman (2-0) allowed his first run of the season, but still took home the win. He worked 5.0 innings and surrendered one run on five hits while walking four and striking out three on 89 pitches (54 strikes).
The Rainiers struck early and often against River Cats starter Jose Flores, drawing seven walks and scoring nine runs off the right-hander. Tacoma scored one run in each of the first two innings before erupting for five runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth. Included in that pull-away fourth inning was three-run home runs from both Nieuwenhuis and Andreoli. Tacoma added another run on a fielding error in the top of the sixth, capping their scoring.
Sacramento slowly chipped away at Tacoma's daunting lead between the fourth and eighth innings, scoring five runs but never clawing their way back into the game. The Rainiers held on for a 10-run victory.
The Rainiers and River Cats wrap up their four-game series on Monday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. PT. Tacoma right-hander Josh Smith (0-2, 7.11) will start opposite Sacramento left-hander Andrew Suarez (0-0, 0.00).
