TACOMA, Wash. - A six-home run barrage powered the Iowa Cubs to a 10-3 win over the Tacoma Rainiers at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday. The victory forced Tacoma to settle for a series split in the final meeting between the two clubs.
Iowa's Edgar Gonzalez accounted for half of the Cubs home run total after going deep three times in the contest. The second baseman stretched the Rainiers 1-0 deficit to three runs after belting a two-run home run in the first inning. He led off the fifth with a solo shot and then went deep again with another one-run blast with two outs in the seventh.
Gonzalez's three-homer outing marked the first recorded at Cheney Stadium since outfielder Wladimir Balentien went deep three times against New Orleans on April 28, 2008.
Tacoma cut Iowa's 3-0 lead down to one run in the bottom of the third inning. Carlos Triunfel scored on a missed catcher error committed by outfielder Jae-Hoon Ha, and Carlos Peguero plated another with a sacrifice fly.
The I-Cubs collected six runs over the next three innings to go ahead 9-2 before Nate Tenbrink tallied Tacoma's final run with a solo homer in the sixth - his 12th of the season.
Starter Tom Wilhelmsen (0-1) was dealt the loss in his Tacoma debut after surrendering three runs on three hits and striking out four over two innings. The right-hander was optioned to the Rainiers from Seattle earlier in the day.
The Rainiers (62-56) enjoy a scheduled league off day tomorrow before opening a four-game series at Albuquerque on Thursday, August 8. Right-hander Andrew Carraway (6-5, 4.87) is slated to start for Tacoma in the first game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
