Iowa Cubs News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Iowa Cubs (53-65) launched a season-high six home runs, including three by Edgar Gonzalez, in a 10-3 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers (62-56) at Cheney Stadium this afternoon. The Cubs earned a split of this four-game series and finished 2-10 on this road trip.
Darnell McDonald started the home run derby by belting the first pitch of the game for a home run off Rainiers' starter Tom Wilhelmsen. It was the second straight day that McDonald led off a game with a home run. Jae-Hoon Ha singled and Gonzalez followed with his first homer of the game to extend the Cubs' lead to 3-0.
Cubs' starter Yoanner Negrin worked four innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Both runs scored in the bottom of the third inning to pull the Rainiers to within one at 3-2.
Left-hander James Paxton took over for Wilhelmsen in the third. The Cubs added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Darnell McDonald and then two more in the fifth. Gonzalez led off with his second home run, this time to right-center field. The Cubs loaded the bases and Ty Wright scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Torres. Jonathan Arias finished the fifth inning for Paxton, but gave up two more runs in the sixth. With two outs, Wright reached on a double that Stefen Romero lost in the sun in left field. Dave Sappelt and Mike Olt followed with back-to-back homers that broke the game open to a 9-3 Cubs' lead.
Gonzalez capped the scoring with his third homer of the game in the seventh. Ian Stewart also had a three-homer game for the Cubs earlier this season on June 8. Gonzalez added his fifth hit with a single in the ninth. The last Cub to have a five-hit game was Alfredo Amezaga, last season on April 15 at Round Rock.
The Cubs used five different relievers for one inning apiece to finish the game. Nick Struck (6-8) pitched a scoreless fifth and was credited with the win. Marcus Hatley gave up a home run to Nate Tenbrink in the sixth inning for the Rainiers' final run. Marcos Mateo, Chang-Yong Lim, and Brian Schlitter finished the game.
The Cubs are off tomorrow before opening and eight-game home stand on Thursday night against the Fresno Grizzlies at 7:05. RH Kyle Hendricks is scheduled to start for his triple-A debut against RH Mitch Lively (5-4, 5.30) for the Grizzlies. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
