Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: The RedHawks close out their 12-game homestand and four-game series with Colorado Springs at 7:05 p.m. at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Oklahoma City is on a club record 11-game winning streak and seeks a third consecutive series sweep.
Last Game: Jose Martinez drove in three runs and the RedHawks received more strong pitching in a 6-2 win Monday over Colorado Springs. The Sky Sox took the first lead on a RBI double by Jordan Pacheco in the third inning. Oklahoma City's Jon Singleton hit a bases-loaded double to left field to drive in two runs in the fourth inning and give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. Martinez drove in runs in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings to make it 5-1, and he later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth. Oklahoma City starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc (3-1) allowed just one run and five hits, walked four and struck out five in six-plus innings. LeBlanc combined with relievers Jorge De Leon, Eric Berger, and Hector Ambriz to surrender just one earned run.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Paul Clemens makes his third start of the season with the RedHawks tonight after spending most of the season with the Astros...Clemens most recently started Thursday's game, holding Reno scoreless and allowing two hits over three innings. He walked three and struck out three and was limited to 57 pitches as he builds back up to a starter's workload...Clemens made 30 relief appearances for the Astros and went 4-4 with a 6.36 ERA. He endured a rough month in July, allowing 13 runs and 15 hits over 6.2 IP and was optioned to Oklahoma City July 29...After starting the year with the RedHawks, Clemens made his Major League debut on April 9 in Seattle and earned the win after throwing four innings of relief...Clemens started 20 games for the RedHawks in 2012, going 8-8 with a 6.73 ERA. He led the team in both wins and innings (101.2 IP)...Clemens last faced Colorado Springs May 22, 2012. He allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings and was the winning pitcher in the team's 9-5 win at Security Service Field.
Against the Sky Sox: 2013: 3-0 2012: 3-1 All-time: 67-48 In OKC: 41-18
For the second straight year, the RedHawks have won each of the first three games of the series. They'll look to sweep the Sky Sox for the first time since winning all four meetings between the teams in 2005...The RedHawks have now won seven of the last nine meetings overall...Both teams hit well during last season's series, as the RedHawks batted .328 and the Sky Sox hit .326...The teams last played at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark August 12-15, 2011. They split the series and two games went into extra innings...The RedHawks hold a 41-18 edge in Bricktown all-time.
Streaking Into History: With last night's victory, the RedHawks continued to add to their all-time longest win streak at 11 games. This is also their second streak of 11 consecutive wins at home this season (April 26-May 10), which are both tied for third-longest all-time. The longest all-time home winning streak stands at 14 games (May 10-June 7, 2012).
Eleven in Vogue: The RedHawks are one of three teams in professional baseball currently on an 11-game win streak, joining the Atlanta Braves and Double-A Jacksonville Suns (Miami Marlins). Braves reliever David Carpenter, who spent parts of 2011 and 2012 with the RedHawks, was the winning pitcher in Atlanta's 3-2 victory over Washington last night.
High-Water Mark: The RedHawks now sit a season-best 17 games above .500 and own the league's best record at 67-50. By going 16-4 since the All-Star Break, the RedHawks have turned a 4.5-game deficit in the standings into a four-game lead atop the American Southern Division. It's their largest lead in first place since May 16.
Mound Magic: Since the All-Star Break, the RedHawks have a 2.60 ERA (51 ER/176.1 IP). The starters have combined for a 2.41 ERA (32 ER/119.2 IP) and allowed more than two earned runs in a game just three times. The RedHawks have held opponents to three runs or less in 14 of their 20 games since the break as well.
Streak Secret: The RedHawks are batting .328 (117x357) as a team during their current winning streak. They have been extremely opportunistic, hitting .349 (38x109) with runners in scoring position, including going 18-for-42 this series.
Singleton Surging: Jon Singleton is currently on a season-best six-game hitting streak, going 10-for-22 with a homer, three doubles, and seven RBI. After striking out 61 times in his first 41 games (143 AB), he has struck out just three times over the past eight games including none in his last four games.
As the Crowe Flies: Trevor Crowe is 12-for-22 (.545) with three RBI during a six-game hitting streak and now is 13-for-32 (.406) over the first nine games of his rehab assignment. Crowe has been sidelined since spraining the AC joint in his right shoulder on June 20. Including when he was with the RedHawks full-time earlier this season, the team is 17-2 when Crowe leads off this season.
The Laird Up There: Brandon Laird is 8-for-15 in his last four games with three doubles, 10 RBI and five runs scored. He is now tied for third in the PCL with 30 doubles and leads the RedHawks with 105 hits, 13 home runs, 65 RBI, and 57 runs scored.
No-K Corral: Yesterday Trevor Crowe led off the game with a strikeout, but the RedHawks did not strike out the rest of the game. It's the second time in three days they've struck out just once and they have struck out just nine times over the past four games. Their 801 K's at the plate are second-least in the PCL, trailing only Omaha (723).
Closing Bell: Oklahoma City is 18-10 overall in series finales this season, including 12-2 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
