Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Brandon Bantz hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Tacoma Rainiers to 6-5 win over the Iowa Cubs at Cheney Stadium on Monday night.
Bantz broke open a 5-5 tie with a one-out solo shot to left field off Iowa right-hander Casey Coleman. The home run was his second with the Rainiers this season and first since June 3rd.
Tacoma's lead was as large as 5-3 after posting five combined runs over the first and second innings. Carlos Peguero and Franklin Gutierrez eliminated the Iowa's early 2-0 edge after each posted RBI singles in the first. Gutierrez went on to score the go-ahead run on a throwing error committed by left fielder Darnell McDonald later in the frame.
The Cubs tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the second, but Tacoma bounced back with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Second baseman Ty Kelly lined a single to left field that allowed Bantz and Carlos Triunfel to score with one out.
Former Rainiers first baseman Brad Nelson homered with two outs in the fifth to bring Iowa within a run, and Ty Wright singled home Edwin Maysonet to even the score at 5-5 with two outs in the seventh.
Logan Bawcom (1-4) earned his first win of the season after holding Iowa to two hits over one scoreless inning of work in the ninth. Starter Blake Beavan surrendered five runs - four earned - on 10 hits and struck out four with one walk issued over 6.2 innings.
The Rainiers (62-55) host the final game of a four-game series with Iowa (52-65) at 11:35 a.m. tomorrow, August 6. Left-hander James Paxton is scheduled to start for Tacoma in the finale between the clubs against I-Cubs right-hander Yoanner Negrin (3-5, 4.95).
