Rain, Dragons defeat Chiefs
May 20, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release
Dayton, OHâ The Peoria Chiefs couldn't catch a break from Mother Nature on Thursday night and after a rain delay of nearly three hours fell to the Dayton Dragons 7-1 to open a four game road trip. The game began at 7:11 EST and ended at 12:29 AM the longest game for the Chiefs since at least the 2001 season.
After the start of the game was delayed by rain, the game got under way with a light drizzle falling. Jon George retired the Chiefs in the 1st before Dayton picked up a leadoff double against Chiefs starter Chris Shaver in their half of the 1st. After an out, Phil Gentry scored on a groundout by Habelito Hernandez for the first run of the game.
With two outs in the 2nd the lightning started and a thunderstorm halted play at 7:30 PM. After a hard heavy rain that left the field very sloppy and the outfield covered in puddles the game resumed at 10:13 PM. Neither starting pitcher returned to the mound as reliever Alfredo Polanco entered for the Chiefs and Josh Thigpen came on for Dayton.
Polanco held the Dragons scoreless through his first three innings but ran into a buzzsaw in the 5th. Polanco walked Cody Strait to start the inning before a stolen base and a single gave the Dragons a 2-0 lead. After a hit batter, Hernandez drove home a pair with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch by reliever Jon Hunton. An error in the infield followed by a single and a double capped the six run inning as Dayton posted a 7-0 lead.
In the 7th inning, Alan Rick doubled off reliever James Morrison with two outs. Newcomer Aaron Sisk followed with his first hit with the Chiefs, a double to score Rick and get the Chiefs on the board.
Dayton native Jerry Blevins struck out two and recorded the Chiefs only 1-2-3 inning in the 8th. Shaver (1-4) took the loss despite throwing just 13 pitches in the 1st inning, his only inning of work. He allowed one run on one hit with no walks or strikeouts.
The Chiefs and Dragons had two games messed up by rain in 2004, once in each stadium. On May 18th the Chiefs won 13-7 in six innings after a nearly two hour rain delay. Then on August 18th the Chiefs took a 5-0 decision when a game at O'Brien Field was called due to rain after five innings. The delay in that contest was just over an hour.
Pepsi Player of the Game Aaron Sisk (SS) âPlaying in his first game with the Chiefs, Sisk was 1-for-2 with a double, walk, RBI and stolen base. He drove home the Chiefs only run in the 7th inning. Notes... Ryan Harvey returned to the lineup for the first time since he left with back spasms on May 1st and was 0-for-1 before leaving after the rain delay because of the field conditions...The Chiefs were 8-8 without Harvey in the lineup...Eric Patterson was also replaced because of the slippery field conditions...The start of the game was delayed 11 minutes because of day long showers in the Dayton area...Game two of the four game series is Friday at 7:00 PM EST...The Chiefs will have RH Lee Gwaltney (3-1) on the mound against RH Brad Morenko (3-1)...The game can be heard on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
