Five Game Winning Streak Comes to End with 3-2 Loss

May 20, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - Two innings have separated the Dayton Dragons (17-23) and the Peoria Chiefs (18-23) in the first two games of the four game weekend series at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons used a six run fifth inning for a 7-1 win on Thursday, in game one. In the second game of the series on Friday, the game was a draw through eight innings until an unearned run in the top of the ninth gave the Chiefs a 3-2 win, ending the Dragons five game winning streak.

Friday night's starting pitching match up featured a pair of former Philadelphia Phillies farmhands, LHP Joe Wilson (ND) of the Dragons and Lee Gweltney (ND) from Peoria. The pair were teammates in 2003 with the Gulf Coast League Phillies before Wilson was dealt from the Phils to the Reds in a four player deal that sent Corey Lidle to Philadelphia for three minor leaguers. Gweltney was signed by the Chicago Cubs after being released by the Phillies at the end of spring training 2005.

Wilson had the shorter stint on Friday night, tossing 4.0 innings allowing two Chief runs in the third inning. Adam Sisk picked up an RBI single that scored Sam Fuld who led off the inning with a walk, stole second and then moved to third on Eric Patterson's single to left. Patterson moved up to second on Sisk's hit, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Mike Mallory's sac fly to left and Peoria led 2-0.

Gweltney was dealing in his first five innings of work, taking a no-hitter to the sixth inning. The only Dragons to reach base were Drew Anderson, who walked and Cody Strait who was hit by a pitch in the third inning. Dayton finally got to the right hander in the sixth inning to knot the game at 2-2. A pair of single and a base on balls loaded the bases with one down for Jeremiah Piepkorn, who had all ready launched a pair of grand slams on the home stand. Piepkorn never got the chance to swing the bat, getting plunked by a pitch and driving home a run to cut the lead in half. Tonys Gutierrez evened up the game at two a side with an RBI ground out to second that scored Paul Janish.

The bullpen's took over and did the job for both teams heading into the ninth. After Gweltney departed with 6.0 innings of two hit, two run, four K baseball, Ed Campusano (WP 2-2) held Dayton at bay in the seventh and eighth keeping the score tied at 2-2. Brad Morenko (ND) was masterful for Dayton throwing 4.0 innings of four hit relief. Morenko struck out a pair of Peoria batters and did not allow a run.

The Chiefs picked up the winning tally in the top half of the ninth inning off Dragons reliever Carlos Bohorquez (LP, 0-2). Fuld reached with a one out walk and went from first to third on a wild pitch. Dayton moved the infield in with Patterson at the plate. Bohorquez got the ground ball he needed, but the normally sure handed Janish misplayed the grounder for an error and the Chiefs took a 3-2 lead.

Peoria called on closer and former UD Flyer Jerry Blevins (SV, 7) in the ninth and he came through striking out the first two batters before allowing a two out walk to Drew Anderson. With two down, Blevins K'd Strait with the tying run at first to preserve the Peoria win ending the Dragons season high five game win streak.

The Dragons and Chiefs continue the four-game series, Saturday night at Field with a 7:05 First Pitch. RHP Ramon Ramirez gets the nod for the Dragons, with RHP Matt Weber getting the start for Peoria. 1410-AM ESPN Radio carries the game live with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 PM. Friday's game will be televised in the Miami Valley on Time Warner Television cable channel 25, with coverage beginning at 7:00 PM.
