Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities have been playing with fire all season long, rallying for comeback wins 15 different times in the season's first 39 games. But the Swing couldn't mount a late comeback at Burlington on Friday, as they were defeated 3-2 at Community Field. Righty Matt Scherer picked up the loss for the Swing despite striking out six and allowing just two earned runs.
The loss snapped the Swing's winning streak at seven games, their longest since a ten-game winning streak in 2002. Quad Cities remains 1 ½ games behind first-place Clinton, and ½ game ahead of third-place Wisconsin with 29 games left in the first half. The top two teams qualify for the playoffs.
The Bees jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the third inning, as Miguel Vega drew a one-out walk and Robert Grana singled to center. Geraldo Valentin then roped an RBI double into the left field corner, and Mario Lisson had a two-out single for a 2-0 Bees lead. Burlington added another run in the fourth inning, thanks to a pair of Swing errors and a wild pitch.
Down 3-0, the Swing closed the gap with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Jake Mullinax ripped a single into center, and then Mike Ferris drilled a two-run homer over the wall in right, his fourth home run of the week. Ferris now has seven home runs on the year, tied with teammate Derry Hammond for second-most in the league.
Matt Shepherd had a one-out single in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to Swing season-best ten games, but a double play ball ended the threat. Gabe DeHoyos mowed down the Swing in the ninth to close the door.
The Swing had a tremendous scoring opportunity in the second inning, when they loaded the bases on three straight one-out singles. But Ferris grounded out and Brandon Yarbrough lined out to end the threat and to keep the game scoreless.
Righty Patrick Green picked up the win for the Bees, at one point retiring 16 out of 17 batters.
Scherer was the tough-luck loser for the Swing, as he allowed only three runs (two earned) in his six inning. The righty struck out six and walked three for Quad Cities. Dennis Medina also chipped in with a scoreless inning of work, while Kyle McClellan worked a scoreless eighth inning, and has not allowed a run in three relief appearances.
UP NEXT: The Swing and Bees continue the series on Saturday night, as Dennis Dove (4-2, 3.09) goes to the hill Danny Christensen (0-1, 4.43). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00, and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 will begin at 5:45.
