Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays beat the Lansing Lugnuts in the second game of a twin-bill by a 4-1 count Friday evening on a night when the team presented its first Fireworks show of the season.
The Devil Rays were shutout in Game 1 of the series 2-0 as Chi-Hung Cheng and Danny Hill allowed two hits to Patrick Cottrell and very little else. James Houser pitched five shutout innings for the Rays in the seven-inning game with two hits and three strikeouts before Matt Larson was touched for two runs in the top of the seventh to take his first loss of the season. It was the first time this season that the Rays have been shutout.
Game 2 featured another strong outing from a Devil Rays starter. Brandon Mann struck out six in six innings after allowing just four hits, three walks and a solo home run to David Hicks. Reid Brignac was the offensive sparkplug for the Rays with a three-run triple in the third inning to break the scoreless tie. A fourth run was added when Brignac scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Francisco Leandro.
The Devil Rays treated the fans to the first Fireworks show of the season after an April 22 Fireworks date was washed away. The team also gave away 1,500 Seat Cushions courtesy of Comcast. The overall attendance of 2,410 was the second highest total of the season and the highest on a non-School Day game.
Southwest Michigan will take on Lansing in the third game of the series on Saturday night. LHP Jarrad Lavergne will start for the Rays against LHP Aaron Wideman for the Lugnuts. Following tomorrow night's game, all fans are invited to join the Devil Rays and their sister club, the Lexington Legends, staffs and the Rays players at Arcadia Brewing Company for a post-game meet-and-greet that will start at roughly 10 p.m. and go until 12:30 a.m.
