West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - It took the Whitecaps 18 innings to score for the first time in Cedar Rapids this season and despite a four-run ninth inning rally, the Kernels held on for a 6-4 victory Friday afternoon.

For the second day in a row, West Michigan hitters were stymied for eight innings by a Cedar Rapids pitcher who had not pitched more than five innings in prior games this season. On Friday, it was Karl Gelinas who in eight innings allowed three hits and no runs with three strikeouts.

Jesse Smith pitched eight scoreless innings Thursday for Cedar Rapids in a win over the Whitecaps.

West Michigan starter Jair Jurrjens had his shortest outing of the year and pitched just three inning. He gave up five runs on seven hits, including four in the third inning when the Kernels batted around.

The four Whitecaps runs in the ninth were charged to reliever Chris Waters. Andrew Graham had an RBI double, Nick McIntyre collected an RBI on a ground ball and Justin Justice drove in a run with a triple then scored on a wild pitch, which cut the lead to 6-4.

Shortstop Sean Rodriguez ended the game by making a catch as he tripped over centerfielder Richard Giannotti. Brooks Colvin hit a fly ball to shallow left center and Giannotti dove for it, but collided with Rodriguez instead.

Righting the Ship: West Michigan will try to end a stretch of three losses in four game Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
