RailRiders End up on Tip of Rollercoaster Game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - In a game which featured four lead changes, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders outlasted the Rochester Red Wings 9-8 on Saturday night at Frontier Field. The RailRiders clinched a series victory in their only trip of the year to Rochester.

For the third straight day the RailRiders scored multiple runs in the first, this time taking a 2-0 lead on back-to-back RBI singles from Thomas Milone and Socrates Brito. They added another tally in the second on a solo home run from Estevan Florial and another in the third courtesy of an Andrew Velazquez RBI double.

Deivi Garcia allowed a solo home run to Daniel Palka in the bottom of the second, then surrendered three runs in the third. The right-hander gave up four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings, walking three and striking out two.

Rochester briefly took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Palka scored on a sacrifice fly from Alec Keller against Albert Abreu. The RailRiders struck back in the sixth by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four runs to take an 8-5 advantage.

The Red Wings struck back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs against Trevor Lane to tie the game at 8-8. They were the first runs allowed by the left-hander this season.

In the top of the ninth, Armando Alvarez led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk from Velazquez. On the seventh pitch of his at-bat, Kellin Deglan laced a single to left field to score Alvarez on a close play at the plate to give the RailRiders a 9-8 lead.

Rochester put the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth, but Nick Goody (1-1) held on for the win. Dakota Bacus (0-2) received the loss. Deglan entered the game 0-for-10 at the plate on the season, and went 2-for-5 with a run scored and the game-winning RBI.

POSTGAME NOTES: The game lasted 4 hours and six minutes, the third four-hour game of the season for the RailRiders... The contest is the second-longest 9-inning game in SWB franchise history, surpassed only by the May 6, 2021 matchup at Syracuse (4:09)... Three of the four longest games in franchise history have been played this season

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre completes its six-game series at Rochester on Sunday afternoon. The RailRiders send RHP Brody Koerner (0-0, 2.25) to the mound, while the Red Wings counter with LHP Ben Braymer (0-2, 11.91). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m., with coverage on the RailRiders Baseball Network beginning at 12:45 p.m.
