Charlotte Knights News Release

(DURHAM, NC) -- Third baseman Jake Burger and designated hitter Mikie Mahtook both homered for the second consecutive day, but the Durham Bulls scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to go on for an 8-7 win over the Charlotte Knights on Saturday in game five of the six-game series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Bulls scored four runs over the final three innings of Saturday's game.

Burger continued his hot hitting and launched his team-high sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning. Burger's solo shot tied the game up at 4-4 in the sixth. An inning later, Mahtook's solo homer helped the Knights take a lead. Charlotte scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a commanding 7-4 lead over the Bulls. Center fielder Brian Goodwin had a big two-run single in the seventh inning.

Much like on Friday night, the Bulls battled back late. In the bottom of the seventh frame, a key two-run double from Nathan Lukes pulled the Bulls to within just one run, down 7-6.

In the ninth, a costly error by Charlotte catcher Nate Nolan tied the game at 7-7. Brett Sullivan later singled home the game-winning run. Charlotte RHP Ryan Burr (1-1, 4.76) gave up three hits in the ninth, including two runs (one earned), and was charged with the loss.

The Knights and Bulls will play the finale of the six-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. LHP Matt Tomshaw (0-1, 5.84) is scheduled to take the mound for the Knights.
