READING, PA - The Reading Phillies (40-40) scored six unanswered runs to race past the Richmond Flying Squirrels (41-37), 7-5, in front of 7,655 at FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday night.

Francisco Peguero and Charlie Culberson provided back-to-back singles to start the ballgame to lead the Squirrels to the early lead against Reading starter B.J. Rosenberg. Roger Kieschnick grounded into a fielder's choice to move Peguero to third, and he scored for a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice-fly to center field from Chris Dominguez.

Wes Hodges stretched the lead when he led off the fourth inning for the Squirrels with a solo-home run to left-center field. A batter later, Rosenberg hit Juan Perez before issuing a walk to Nick Noonan. The runners advanced on a sacrifice-bunt, and Peguero made it 4-0 with a two-run single back through the middle.

Squirrels' left-hander Clayton Tanner had no trouble with the R-Phils through three innings, but their bats came alive in the fourth. With two outs in the inning, Matt Rizzotti singled. Derrick Mitchell doubled behind him to put runners at second and third. Stephen Susdorf lined a two-run single to cut the Squirrels lead in half, 4-2. Niuman Romero capped the inning with an RBI single to left-center field and the Squirrels' lead was just one, 4-3.

Both starters left after five innings and didn't factor in the decision. Tanner left with the lead, having conceded three earned runs on eight hits. He walked none and struck out one. Rosenberg allowed four earned runs on seven hits, walked two, hit two and struck out one.

Left-hander David Quinowski came on in the sixth inning, and Reading immediately seized the lead. Susdorf got the rally started with a one-out single, followed by a single from Romero. Tuffy Gosewisch then cracked a three-run home run to left field to put the R-Phils in front, 6-4.

Peguero led off the seventh inning with a solo-home run off of reliever Mike Cisco (5-0) to pull the Squirrels within a run. However, Richmond would get no closer, as Cisco earned the win in relief. Quinowski was tagged with the loss, falling for the second time in relief after allowing three runs in his lone inning.

The R-Phils tacked on an unearned insurance-run against right-hander Edwin Quirarte in the eighth inning to cap the scoring for the evening. Right-hander Justin Friend earned his third save of the season, retiring the Squirrels in order in the ninth to complete the Reading win.

Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 PM at FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday night. LHP Ryan Verdugo (5-3, 3.70) will take the ball for the Squirrels against RHP J.C. Ramirez (6-7, 3.91) for the R-Phils. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:05 PM, and can be heard on Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com.
