Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) -- A season ago, Tuffy Gosewsich was named as the best defensive catcher in the Eastern League by Baseball America. This season, he's quickly become one of the best offensive catchers in the league.

Gosewisch launched a go-ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the R-Phils flew past the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-5 in game two of their four-game series from FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading on Friday night.

The 27-year-old backstop is coming off a solid month of June, which saw him hit .309 with three home runs and 16 RBIs. So far, the month of July has started off with a bang.

With Reading trailing Richmond 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, reliever David Quinowski came on to replace starter Clayton Tanner, who allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings. With one out in the inning, Quinowski began to struggle.

R-Phils right fielder Steve Susdorf started the one-out rally with a single up the middle. Next batter Niuman Romero, followed with a single, and the R-Phils had runners on the corners with just one out -- setting things up for Gosewisch to be the hero - and he would do just that.

Gosewisch launched the pitch from Quinowski (2-2, 2.60) over the left field fence to give Reading the 6-5 lead. The home run for Gosewisch was his eighth of the season, and he finished the night 1-4 with three RBIs. He now has 39 RBIs on the season and is hitting .277.

Reading reliever Mike Cisco relieved B.J. Rosenberg, and notched his fifth win of the season. Cisco allowed a run on two hits in one inning and is now 5-0 with a 1.76 ERA. Rosenberg allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings. The Newport News, VA native walked two and fanned one.

Relievers Jake Diekman and Justin Friend combined to toss three scoreless innings. Diekman fanned four over two innings, while Friend got the final three outs to earn his third save of the season.

The two clubs will be at it again on Saturday in game three. RHP J.C. Ramirez (6-7, 3.91) gets the nod for Reading, while Richmond will send LHP Ryan Verdugo (5-3, 3.70).

Coverage begins with the R-Phils pre-game show at 6:05 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1240 AM WIOV. Brian Seltzer will have the call for all of the action on the R-Phils Radio Network. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
