Bridgeport Islanders News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. (Jan. 4, 2012) - Kevin Poulin stopped 24 shots to earn his second straight shutout and the Sound Tigers recorded three power play goals en route to a 4-0 win over the Manchester Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. The Sound Tigers improve to 14-17-1-2 overall with their second straight win. The Monarchs fall to 21-13-0-2.
The Sound Tigers controlled much of the play to start the game and jumped in front 5:28 into the game. Tony Romano and Micheal Haley led the Sound Tigers on an odd-man rush and Haley's initial shot was stopped by Martin Jones' left leg pad. However, a Manchester defenseman's clearing attempt caromed off of Sound Tigers forward Sean Backman and past Jones for his third goal of the season to give the Sound Tigers the early lead. Haley doubled the Sound Tigers lead with 2:29 left in the opening frame. After his first shot was stopped in front towards the end of a power play, he collected the puck in the right circle and fired through Jones for his third goal of the season. The Sound Tigers outshot the Monarchs 20-5 in the opening period and carried their 2-0 lead into the middle frame.
Manchester recorded nine of the first 11 shots of the second period, but the Sound Tigers would be the only team to score. Brandon Kozun's boarding penalty led to a Sound Tigers power play, and they would take advantage for the second time in the game. Scott Howes collected the puck by the right corner and skated towards a Monarchs defender in front. Howes lifted the puck over his stick into the slot, where Romano gathered it and send a backhander over Jones' blocker for his fourth goal of the season. It gave Romano goals in back-to-back games, and the Sound Tigers led 3-0 heading to the final period.
Rhett Rakhshani added to the Sound Tigers lead with 3:33 left in regulation. The second year forward a loose puck in the slot and sent it into the open net for his fifth goal of the season and the Sound Tigers third power play tally of the night to close out the scoring.
The Sound Tigers will look for their third straight win on Saturday night when the visit the Cumberland County Civic Center for the first time this season to face the Portland Pirates.
