Portland remains one game in front of Binghamton

(Portland, ME) - Aaron Bates and Jered Stanley blasted 3-run homers, leading the Portland Sea Dogs (73-64) to a 9-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (59-80) on Friday night in the series opener at Hadlock Field. With Portland and Binghamton both winning, the Sea Dogs remain one game in front of the B-Mets for the second playoff spot in the Northern Division.

Chad Rhoades (5-3) worked 2+ innings of relief for Portland to earn the win. The Portland righty relieved Kris Johnson in the fifth inning and struck out David Smith to end the inning. Rhoades pitched a scoreless sixth and Daniel Haigwood closed out the game with 2 and 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.

Jo Matumoto (2-1) worked only two innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and four hits to suffer the loss for New Hampshire. New Hampshire's bullpen allowed five runs in six innings and walked five.

Portland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Iggy Suarez's two-out, RBI single. The Fisher Cats came right back to tie the game in the third inning when J.P. Arencibia blooped a 2-out single down the right-field line. Bates would snap a 1-1 tie with a 3-run shot over the right-center field wall in the third. Stanley greeted Orlando Roman with a 3-run homer in fifth inning, giving the 'Dogs a 7-2 lead.

LHP Kris Johnson (ND) worked 4.2 IP in his final start of the 2008 regular season. The lefty allowed five hits, two runs, three walks and fanned five. Chris Gutierrez led off the fifth inning with homer off Johnson.

Lars Anderson knocked in the final two runs with a single in the sixth inning.

Portland is 13-12 against New Hampshire this season and will host the Fisher Cats on Saturday night at Hadlock Field. Catch all the action on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network beginning at 5:40 PM.

Notes...Portland ended their scoreless streak at 21 innings with a run in the second...The 'Dogs received three walks from Zach Daeges and Mickey Hall.
