
Pettway & Rodriguez both throw shutout innings in Eastern League debuts

Portland, ME- Chris Gutierrez crushed a home run over the Maine Monster, and relief pitchers Brian Pettway and Edward Rodriguez both threw scoreless innings of relief in their respective Eastern League debuts, but Aaron Bates and Jered Stanley stroked three-run home runs to lead the Portland Sea Dogs to a 9-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Friday night at Hadlock Field.
Portland (73-64) grabbed a 1-0 lead against Jo Matumoto in the bottom of the second inning when John Otness (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R) scored from second base on an Iggy Suarez (1-for-4, RBI) two-out, infield single.
New Hampshire (59-80) tied the score, 1-1, against Kris Johnson in the top of the third inning when J.P. Arencibia (1-3, RBI, HBP) looped a run-scoring single down the rightfield line, scoring Scott Campbell (1-for-4, BB, R), who led off the inning with a single.
Bates (2-for-4, HR, BB, 3 RBI, R) lifted the Sea Dogs to a 4-1 lead when he belted a three-run homer, his 11th, over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the third inning.
Matumoto (2-1) suffered the loss after yielding four runs -three earned- on three hits in two-plus innings. Making his first start of the year, the left-hander walked four and notched one strikeout.
Gutierrez (1-for-4, HR, RBI) responded for the Fisher Cats in the top of the fifth inning with a solo homer, his second, over the Maine Monster in left field, cutting the Sea Dogs' lead to 4-2.
Portland opened things up in the bottom of the fifth inning when Stanley (1-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) smashed his first career Eastern League home run, a three-run blast off Orlando Roman that built the Sea Dogs' lead to 7-2.
The lead ballooned to 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Lars Anderson (2-for-4, BB, 2 RBI) laced a two-run single off Roman.
Chad Rhoades (5-3) worked two hitless innings of relief to earn the win, walking one and recording two strikeouts.
The Binghamton Mets rallied to top the New Britain Rock Cats, 3-1, on Friday night to remain one game behind Portland for the Northern Division Wild Card playoff spot with three games remaining.
The Fisher Cats and the Sea Dogs play the second game of their four-game series Saturday night at 6:00pm. New Hampshire's Jared Gothreaux (0-1, 9.00) makes his first start against Portland's Clay Buchholz (0-0, 3.86). Radio coverage begins at 5:40pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
