
Thunder walks off with win

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez had the game-winning hit in the ninth inning to lift the Thunder to a walk-off win over Connecticut 4-3 on Friday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton has 31 hits in its last two games. All 14 hits on Friday night were singles.
With the scored tied at 3-3 in the ninth inning, Infielder Kevin Russo started the frame with a single against Connecticut reliever Ronnie Ray (6-3). Shortstop Ramiro Pena advanced Russo to second base with a bunt single. Center fielder Colin Curtis followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Russo and Pena into scoring position. After a walk to Catcher Francisco Cervelli, Gonzalez lifted a line drive over the head of Connecticut Right fielder Mike Mooney to plate the winning run. Gonzalez finished the game 4 x 5 with a run and an RBI. Trenton (84-53) had scored the tying run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Infielder Carlos Mendoza.
Connecticut (67-71) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Center fielder Carlos Sosa. The home run came off of Trenton Starting pitcher Oneli Perez. The Thunder tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a double play groundout by First baseman Chris Malec. Trenton took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Designated hitter P.J. Pilittere. Connecticut scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sosa connected on an RBI single, and a throwing error by Curtis plated First baseman Adam Witter with the second run.
Thunder Reliever Kevin Whelan (2-0) tossed two innings to earn the win. He allowed one hit and struck out. Trenton used four pitchers (all relievers) in the victory. Perez struck out nine in four innings of work. He allowed only one hit and one run. Trenton's pitching staff struck out 16, one shy of the season-high. Ray allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss. Curtis and Cervelli each had three hits in the win for Trenton.
Trenton and Connecticut play the second game of the four-game series on Saturday night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. RHP George Kontos (6-11, 3.65) will start for Trenton against Connecticut LHP Ben Snyder (1-6, 6.14).
