Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - The results are in! Voting for the 2008 Fan Favorite Friday Bobblehead series came to an end on December 1 and over 900 votes have been tallied. The top three vote getters were former Pirates players Kevin Kaminski, Trevor Gillies and Shane O'Brien. Bobbleheads made in the likeness of each player will be given away at three upcoming home games this season.
This marks the first time in five seasons the Pirates will giveaway collectable bobbleheads at a home game. The Pirates would like to thank Memic, Bath Savings Institution, UniFirst and McDonald's for sponsoring the giveaways.
The first bobblehead giveaway will be on Friday, January 23 during the Pirates game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Kevin Kaminski bobbleheads, sponsored by Memic, will be given away to the first 2,000 fans in attendance that night. Kaminski played for the Pirates during their inaugural season in 1993-94, as well as 1994-95 and 1997-98. In 113 games with Portland, he recorded 37 goals, 54 assists and 797 penalty minutes. Kaminski was inducted in the Portland Pirates Hall of Fame in 2000 and is currently the head coach of the Mississippi RiverKings of the CHL.
Trevor Gillies bobbleheads, sponsored by Bath Savings Institution, will be given away during the Friday, February 13 game against the Worcester Sharks. A fan favorite during his two seasons (2005-06, 2006-07) with the Pirates, Gillies was known for his toughness and physical play as well as his personality off the ice. He recorded three goals, nine assists and 320 penalty minutes in 101 games with Portland. Gillies now plays for the Albany River Rats.
Shane O'Brien played for the Pirates for only one season, 2005-06, but quickly became one of the most popular players in team history (and the first to have his own radio show). His bobbleheads, sponsored by UniFirst, will be given away at the Friday, March 27 game against the Lowell Devils. During his 77 games with Portland, O'Brien tallied eight goals, 33 assists and 287 penalty minutes. He has since played in the NHL for both the Anaheim Ducks and Tampa Bay Lightning and is currently with the Vancouver Canucks.
