Moose Drop Both Games To Marlies

For the first time this season, the Manitoba Moose dropped both of their games in a week falling to the Toronto Marlies 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night followed by a 4-1 loss on Sunday afternoon. Raymond Sawada scored both Moose goals on Saturday, and was the only shooter to capitalize in the shootout, while Michel Ouellet netted the only Moose goal on Sunday. The Marlies and Moose now sit at a 2-1-0-1 record and still have four matchups in the New Year.

Saturday, December 27, 2008: Manitoba 2, Toronto 3 (SO)

Following two home victories over the Marlies this season, the Moose dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Toronto club at the Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday night. Raymond Sawada earned both Moose goals in regulation time and was the only sniper to beat Winnipegger James Reimer in the shootout. Reimer earned his first professional win in his first professional game against the visiting Moose, while Karl Goehring stopped 26 attempts in his eighth consecutive start.

Sunday, December 28, 2008: Manitoba 1, Toronto 4

In their second earliest start of the season, the Manitoba Moose dropped their second consecutive game to the Toronto Marlies 4-1 at the Ricoh Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. Michel Ouellet scored the lone Moose goal, while Julien Ellis blocked 26 of 30 shots in his first AHL start this season.

Moose Notes

DAYLIGHT SCORING TIME: Sunday afternoon's 4-1 loss to the Toronto Marlies was the second earliest face-off for the Moose so far this season. The earliest was on Dec. 4/08 when the Moose defeated the Houston Aeros in a contest that began at 11:05 am. So far this season, the Moose are 2-2-0-0 in a daytime match-up. Last season the Moose had 12 daytime games and finished with a 9-3-0-0 record when playing before 5:00 pm. Only two of Manitoba's day games this season will face-off at the MTS Centre - the first on Wednesday, Dec. 31/08 vs. Chicago (4:00 pm) and the second on Sunday, March 29/09 vs. Hamilton (2:00 pm).

EARNING ONE POINT: For the first time this season, the Moose dropped a shootout decision - 3-2 at the hands of the Marlies. The Moose have appeared in three shootouts so far this season and proved victorious in the first two. Raymond Sawada was the only sniper who scored a goal in the shootout on Saturday night against Toronto's James Reimer. Last season, the Moose finished 7-3-4 in a shootout, 22nd in the AHL.

RAY EARNS HIS FIRST & SECOND: After appearing in 23 games with the Moose this season, right winger Raymond Sawada scored his first and second goals of the season against the Toronto Marlies on Saturday night, along with scoring the only shootout goal for Manitoba. Sawada's second period goal tied the game at one and his third period goal tied it up at two to force overtime for the third time this season. Sawada has tallied eight assists so far this season and now has a total of 10 points and 22 penalty minutes. Saturday night's goals means Sawada now has a total of four in the AHL as his first two were scored last season while with the Iowa Stars.

Upcoming Opponent

The Moose are back in white on Tuesday and Wednesday night when they host the Calder Cup Champion Chicago Wolves at the MTS Centre. The Moose hold an overall record of 15-11-3-3 vs. the Wolves (7-5-1-3 when playing at the MTS Centre).

Player of the Week Nominee

Nolan Baumgartner

For the first time this season, Moose defenceman Nolan Baumgartner is nominated for AHL Player of the Week... Baumgartner appeared in both games for the Moose this week in Toronto and collected three assists and had a hand in every goal the Moose scored this week... As a result, the Calgary, AB native is now the team's leader in scoring amongst defencemen with 11 points including nine assists... He also finished the week with five shots on net.
