July 7, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (37-50) used a trio of late insurance runs to help hold off the Pawtucket Red Sox (38-49) in a 9-6 win over their North Division rivals on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Lehigh Valley has now won eight of their last 10 games.
The Pigs took an early 5-0 lead with five runs in the first as Russ Canzler (3-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) plated a pair with a two-run double, Logan Moore (2-4, 2 RBI, R) drove home a pair with a two-run bloop single and Chris McGuiness drove home a run with an RBI bloop single.
A Garin Cecchini RBI single and a sac fly from Mike Miller in the top of the second brought Pawtucket within 5-2.
Both runs were charged to Pigs starter David Buchanan (n/d) who gave up the two runs on two hits while walking one and fanning one over three innings of work.
The PawSox cut it to 5-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth as Jemile Weeks and Carlos Peguero each plated a run with an RBI double.
Pigs RHP Dustin McGowan (2-1) gave up the two runs on five hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout in 3.0 IP to earn the win.
In the home half of the inning, Aaron Altherr got on base with a two-out single, stole second, moved to third on an infield single and scored on a throwing error charged to Weeks to give the IronPigs a 6-4 lead.
Red Sox starter Steven Wright (2-4) gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits while walking one and fanning two in 6.0 IP.
Quintin Berry's RBI single in the top of the eighth against RHP Seth Rosin (2.0 IP, 4 H, R, ER, BB) brought Pawtucket within 6-5. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Rosin was able to get Weeks to ground to second and avoid any further damage.
Lehigh Valley opened up a 9-5 lead with a trio of insurance runs in the home half of the inning as Canzler hit a solo shot; his sixth round-tripper of the season, Edgar Duran (3-4, RBI) drove home run with an RBI single and Chase d'Arnaud (2-4, 2 2B, RBI, R) followed Duran with an RBI double.
Jackie Bradley Jr. cut the lead to 9-6 with a solo shot off of RHP Juan Gutierrez (1.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 2 K) in the top of the ninth.
The series continues on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. as a starter is yet to be determined for the IronPigs but whomever it is will be opposed by PawSox RHP Joe Kelly (0-1, 2.77).
